Q: I want to do some art with characters like Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of OZ, Batman, etc. If I create these images in my own style is it legal to sell them?
A: This is a very gray area and you have to be very careful about it. Many people say that you can sell an original work of art based on licensed images, but you can not sell prints of that art. That is seriously up for debate. A friend of mine by the name of Dee Dreslogh ended up in a long legal battle because she put fan art of Dragon Riders of Pern on her site even though she was never selling the fan art. Anne McCaffery's lawyers determined that since she was making money on her site selling other things then she was using the fan art illegally. You can read more about it through the link I provide below. My advice to you is to avoid it if possible. You are always better off selling your original ideas instead of risking potential problems with copyright holders.
