What do you think of my drawings?

Q: I started college two weeks ago for graphic design. One of my classes is drawing 1. Were using charcoal right now. The first one i made was the milk jug one, the other i did last night. The cereal box on the left have a box of spagetti directly underneath it, so if that part looks weird to you. Let me know how you think im doing so far... thanks....be nice! :0) http://i38.tinypic.com/youfs.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/2m7wz81.jpg

A: My BF - Here's where a lot of people get it wrong: how detailed or accurate a project turns out isn't based on pure talent. A lot of people in the industry can't draw in such detail, but they can translate what's in their head into a concept, explain it, and then the process begins in which to bring that vision to life through division of resources. Here's what I get from your drawings: They may look amateur, but you did it with charcoal on dark gray, so kudos. The execution is a little off because it takes a while to grasp perspective on solid objects. Don't worry, keep at it and it'll come to you naturally. You're already halfway there with that milk carton picture: you can tell the salt shaker is in-line with the milk, and that the cup is in front of it, as well as light source. Shadows are your best friend in life/perspective drawing because it gives, well, perspective. With the Cheerios picture, you can see the top of the can, but not the top of the boxes, which is good, but give the boxes some depth by establishing some sort of perspective (1 or 2 pt will do nicely) and experiment from there. Your attention to detail is good, but try looking outside of the main focus items (cereal boxes, cans, etc.) and draw the background, as well, because if you see things that stand out in real life, there's no reason not to replicate it in your pictures. You've got a lot of advanced ideas, so building the foundation will make you great. Keep up the good work, and sorry this is too long.
