Q: ohk. so basically i need to make a portfolio containing a few works by me..i need to have a topic for that. i have shortlisted to 3 topics, but need further help and suggestions for any other topic 1) mannequins, i thought i could paint mannequins packed in bubble wrap, out on display, out on the street on roads, making it look like they've come to life 2) dancers. i thought i could show different types of dances, two indian (kathakali, dandiya, and bharatnatyam. google them to check them out), tango, the whirling dervishes, and the mordern, krumping. what i'll do is i'll put themn infront of local buildings of karachi (im from pakistan). and maybe put these dancers infront of buildings from the british era..something like this: this, http://arxxiduc.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/tango.jpg put infront of http://www.historickarachi.com/images/MA%20Jinnah%20Karachi.jpg 3) something that i really really want to do, more than the above two. is seven deadly sins. now when i searched images of these, all i see is women depicting these sins. i dont want to do that. i want to use heavy symbolism to show the sins. like for example. thunder, drought represent god's wrath, spider web would represent sloth. for wrath i thought i could do a local protest like this, showing how people bring their wrath out on streets: http://hrcpblog.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/nytimes-teargas.jpg http://www.paktribune.com/images/newsimages/2008/04/car-on-fire-karachi-violence.jpg for sloth i thought i could do and empty messed up bed. i saw a picture where a guy showed sloth by a girl in a swing blowing bubbles, showing how shes wasting her time doing nothing. i also thought i could put potatoes on a couch to represent couch potatoes...i need more creative ideas. so please help me out, tell me which topic is better. suggestions for other topic are welcome too. and also guide me as to how i can make any topic better, or what other symbols and stuff i could paint for the sins, thanks alot.
A: The mannequins theme is the weakest theme as it will be difficult to differentiate them from people. I like the dance theme but the deadly sins is a very good theme. Think about all the symbols you could use to represent the sins, and make your materials match the sin too. Perhaps an empty chocolate box surrounded by chcocolate wrappers for gluttony, or a pair of fluffy handcuffs for lust. Maybe a spider web is not so good for sloth because spiders can be quite quick, perhaps a remote control would be better to represent a couch potato! Actual potatoes on a couch is a bit too obvious. Think laterally. The sins will make a nice series of works. Good luck!
