Q: Hi all, I understand what the term refers to regarding food and beauty products etc, but was wondering about the other ways in which the word Organic is used. Alot of furniture designers / artists / sculptors sometimes describe their work as "very organic" or "my inspiration for this work is very organically based". I think it means natural / stripped back / bare, but I'd greatly appreciate if someone clarify it correctly for me. Also, usually it's the plummy, @rty f@rty types that use the term so I'm wondering if they just use it to make their work sound more important and fancier than others? :-P Thanks so much in advance :-)
A: Apart from all those fancy dictionary definitions of "Organic", For an artwork it usually describes something that has a natural feel/look and doesn't really have to represent any particular thing. Just to clarify things, its not usually the object that the artwork represents but sometimes the textures and shapes in general. Looks like part of or is a living thing. Not very structured or symmetrical. eg. A tree branch would be more organic looking than a metal spoon.
